Spinal Stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal and it can occur anywhere in the spine, though it's much more common in the neck and lower back regions than the middle back. "Stenosis" is a general term for "abnormal narrowing", and as such, you may occasionally hear the term referring to other areas of the body. As chiropractors, our focus is the spine, and spinal stenosis is a common aging-related problem.
Some of the things that can cause or contribute to spinal stenosis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, scoliosis, lordosis, Paget's disease, osteoporosis, and degenerative disc
disease. A disc herniation can cause the disc material to protrude into the spinal canal or nerve root foramen thereby causing stenosis.
Spinal stenosis can cause pain or numbness, muscle weakness in the extremities and other serious problems such as the inability to control one's bowel or bladder or even paralysis in extreme
cases. The symptoms vary because it depends which nerves are being compromised and the severity.
