Sciatica and Lower Back Pain

Sciatica is a common condition caused by excessive pressure on the sciatic nerve. Although sciatica can cause pain and limited mobility in the lower back, it does not have to be a long-term ailment you live with. If you have recently been in an auto accident or are experiencing symptoms of sciatica, our chiropractors are here to help. At Millar Chiropractic Clinics, we offer various non-invasive techniques to naturally alleviate your low back pain or discomfort and prevent it from returning.

Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica is pain that originates from the lower back and shoots through the buttocks down into your leg. Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, becomes compressed or irritated, causing pain. Your sciatic nerve may be compressed due to injuries, weight gain, or medical conditions that weaken your spinal structure. Common causes of sciatica and lower back pain include:

  • Injuries: Car accidents, slips, and falls may injure your back, resulting in pain.
  • Herniated discs: Due to age, accidents, and other factors, your discs may protrude or move out of position, resulting in low back pain.
  • Osteoarthritis: Weakening of the cartilage that cushions your joints may result in stiffness and pain in the back.
  • Poor posture: If your occupation involves sitting down for prolonged hours, you may put undue pressure on your spine, resulting in pain.
  • Spinal stenosis: Wear and tear of the spine may cause narrowing of the vertebrae column, compressing the spinal nerves.

Since there are many causes of sciatica, it’s essential to schedule a chiropractic exam to diagnose the root cause.

How Our Chiropractors Can Help

For sciatica pain, the objective of the treatment is to alleviate pressure from the compressed nerve. Spinal adjustments realign the spinal muscles, reducing pressure on the compressed sciatic nerve. For other types of back pain, our chiropractors may recommend massage therapy, stretching exercises, and laser therapy, depending on the cause of the pain or discomfort.
