DTS - Decompression Traction

Decompression Tractiondts1.bmp

For the Non-Surgical Treatment of neck and low back bulging, herniated, and prolapsed disc problems, stenosis and others, the DTS- Decompression Traction System has been shown to be very effective. Decompression traction is just that. It decompresses the disc or desired spinal structure, in many cases pulling the disc off the nerve root(s) and/or lessening inflammation. Decompression Therapy can help relieve pain associated with disc herniation, bulging disc, degenerative discs, and posterior facet syndromes by reducing the pressure on spinal discs and facet joints through unloading created by distraction and positioning. Decompression Therapy may effectively enhance the healing process and renders quick, effective and at times amazing pain relief that enables most patients to return to a more active lifestyle. While staying fully clothed, the computer controlled traction gently pulls the disc apart with long axis distraction thereby creating a negative interdiscal pressure (somewhat like a vacuum). This FDA approved equipment has been used by Millar Chiropractic & Nutrition Centers for over 8 years helping thousands of Tennessee Valley patients with disc problems and other conditions.

You may have seen Dr. Millar demonstrate this table and it's treatments on ABC WAAY-TVnewlogo.jpg Channel 31. The DTS - Decompression Traction System can also be used for the treatment of stenosis, degenerative facet problems and even carpal tunnel. Dr. Greg Millar has often said "Any Doctor can purchase a Decompression Traction table. But, we have the know how and years of experience with Decompression Traction to know where to pull and how much to pull the spine. There is no cookie cutter fix and every spine problem is different." The UAB Dept of Neurosurgery and its neurosurgeons have referred Millar Chiropractic & Nutrition Centers many patients for conservative treatment of disc cases using this equipment. The Doctors of the UAB Dept of Neurosurgery North Outreach Clinic feel that in most cases, conservative treatment such as Decompression Traction, is necessary before surgical options should be explored.

DTS- Decompression Traction is often in the front line of that non-surgical conservative treatment at Millar Chiropractic & Nutrition Centers along with conservative chiropractic care, physical therapy, and pain control.  dts3.bmpPatients can be treated either prone (face down) or supine (face up). Sometimes the case dictates how the pull must be, but in most cases the patient can decide which is most comfortable. Most patients tell us they feel a gentle pulling and stretching without much discomfort. Treatment times take from 15 to 20 minutes depending on the condition. Most problems require 3-4 times a week to get the full benefit of the DTS Decompression Traction. Once the initial treatment sessions of Decompression Traction are complete we recommend a monthly booster for the next year.

There are a number of spinal decompression machines presently used in the United States. After significant research and discussion with the UAB Neurosurgeons, Millar Chiropractic & Nutrition Center has chosen the FDA approved DTS Decompression Traction machine manufactured by Chattanooga/Empi, Inc., the premier manufacturer of physical therapy equipment in the USA. They have manufactured more Decompression Traction tables and have more patient utilization than any other decompression tables in the USA. Many other centers are making wild claims about the effectiveness of their Decompression Traction equipment. We have studied them all, and find the outcomes to be very similar for all Decompression Traction tables. Our opinion, after 8 years of DTS Decompression Traction work on thousands of patients, is that the effectiveness is about a 75% success rate, a little better for lumbar (low back), a little worse for cervical (neck). Again it's more about know how, where to pull and how much to pull than just pulling.

Is DTS right for you?

Clinical studies indicate that Decompression Therapy can be a highly successful treatment for patients suffering from symptoms of bulging, herniated, prolapsed or degenerative discs, as well as sciatica, headache, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Patients are given a thorough examination to determine if they are suitable for Decompression Therapy. Some conditions and patients are not candidate... your doctor will make that determination. In our opinion, most cases need around 18  Decompression Traction sessions. Some a little more some a little less. We like to do a trial of 9 Decompression Traction treatments followed by a re-evaluation then an additional 9 treatments as indicated.  Your doctor may prescribe application of electrical muscle stimulation and/or heat/ultrasound to the affected region to further relax your muscles and ligaments. After treatment, your doctor may recommend specific exercises designed to help you regain control and strengthen in muscles that are responsible for spinal stabilization.

The medical literature suggests that Decompression Therapy provides a majority of qualified candidates with relief within a few sessions. Decompression Traction Therapy is an FDA approved procedure that is covered by most insurance companies. We are BCBS preferred providers, we accept Medicare, PeeHip and Fed BCBS and most other insurance.

Consumer Alert: Some Decompression Traction Clinics are charging up to $3500 with most paid in advance for a round of Decompression Traction. Do Not Fall For This.  Your insurance should and will pay for most, if not all of your decompression traction care of course less any deductable and co-pays. Most insurance today pays 80% leaving the 20% balance to you. A far cry from the $3500 charge some of these pressure sales people try to get you to agree to.
